Generational Trends and Values

Throughout time generations have gone through unique experiences that have shaped each generation individually. From their tendencies to their values, each generational era has been guided unconsciously and formed into the leaders they are today. Understanding these trends and values allows us to better understand communication and approach methods to succeed at the task at hand.

Veteran Generation 1928 - 1945
  • Frank, polie, practical and very dedicated to their work.

  • They believe in conformity, authority and rules.

  • They want structure and strong leadership.

  • Create firm set of rules and enforce them equally.

  • This generation hates curse words and does not like when people are treated in a rude manner.

  • Allow these people to share wisdom with younger people. They enjoy mentoring other generations.

Baby Boomers 1946 - 1964
  • They are optimistic, expressive and possess a strong work ethic.

  • Are likely to put in long hours at the office.

  • They enjoy solving problems and believe in building their career over the long term.

  • They either love or hate their managers, very blunt with their feelings.

  • They need to be kept busy and have the opportunity to make a difference.

  • Highly driven generation with a strong work ethic.

Generation X 1965 - 1980
  • Largely independent, with a skeptical or cynical outlook on life

  • They don't define themselves through their work, they see themselves as free agents or job jumpers

  • Clear and open communication is important to this group

  • They like to be apart of the decision making process

  • They like to see a clear career path, mentoring and ongoing training.

  • They want to be able to contribute in many ways to feel important.

Generation Y 1981 - 1996
  • Also known as Millennials

  • They have a very hopeful and positive outlook on life

  • Determined workers but are concerned with their work life balance

  • They want flexibility in the workplace

  • They value teamwork but like to have everything done immediately

  • They want to be apart of something bigger than themselves 

  • They enjoy using technology to solve problems

  • Show them how they can help achieve the company's mission or purpose

Generation Z 1997 - Present
  • They have never lived without the internet, they're very tech savvy

  • Usually good at multitasking

  • Very imaginative people and believe they can change the world

  • They have the entrepreneurial spirit

  • This generation has likely never heard a dial tone or busy signals

  • They expect companies to be using tablets or other technology because that's all they grew up with

  • Pay close attention so that you can learn more about then and adjust to their values to better understand their attitudes towards work
